Do You Really Know Your Shoe Size?

You would probably be surprised at how many people are wearing the wrong size shoe—even at this very moment.  What might surprise you even more is that you may be one of them.  Sound ridiculous?  It’s an issue that could actually be very serious.  Improperly sized shoes can cause a wide range of problems—way beyond sore feet.  The wrong size or fit of shoe can cause a chain reaction of physical problems from you feet to your ankles to your knees, back and neck—and this can eventually affect your overall health.  But the good news is that once you identify this problem, it’s easy to fix.

Proper Shoe Fit

If the shoe fits, wear it, right?  Well, not necessarily.  How your shoes fit is also an important consideration.  Just because you can get your foot into a particular shoe does not guarantee a proper fit.  Here are some things to look for in a proper fit for all different types and styles of shoes:

  • Does your foot slide—either backward or forward—inside your shoe when you walk?
  • Does your foot slide from side to side inside your shoe?
  • Are your toes cramped inside your shoe?
  • Do the soles of your shoes wear unevenly?
  • Do you experience numbness in your feet when you’re wearing your shoes?
  • Do your shoes feel tight in any area of your foot?

These are all indicators that you are wearing the wrong size of shoe.  While you may not think this a big deal, consider these possible effects, both short term and long term, of wearing the wrong size shoe:

  • Blisters
  • Bruised pressure points
  • Vulnerability to ankle injury
  • Leg cramps
  • Knee problems
  • Back problems, which can lead to…
  • Neck problems
  • Headaches
  • Misc. health problems related to spinal misalignment

When you consider all this, isn’t it worth the effort in investigating your proper shoe size?

A Simple Solution

Most often only a simple, minor adjustment is necessary to eliminate the potential for these adverse effects on your body caused by ill-fitting shoes.  Try these suggestions to find your perfect shoe fit:

  • A half-size bigger
  • A half-size smaller
  • A different width (many people do not pay attention to the width-size of their shoes, and often this makes all the difference!)
  • A different style of shoe
  • Heel height (even if only a minor difference)
